The Solaire: a sustainable building in Manhattan11.09.2008

Picture of the day

For New York we have planned the longest stay ever during our world tour, for 8 days we are sleeping in the same bed! A new record! And we were very excited and pleased that  Michael Gubbins from THE SOLAIRE offered us an apartment to stay in New York's first sustainable skyscraper! So we now enjoy an incredible view over Hudson River in Battery Park. It is fantastic!

It is hard to say which city in this world I liked the most, but NY is certainly in top position. For these 8 days, New York had an incredible spectacle: the solartaxi. Wherever I went, wherever I stopped, people shouted at me things like "I love it!" or cab drivers opened their windows and shouted to me: "Let's swap our cars!" Incredible things happened here, it was the most open minded city on our whole world tour.

Normally I like to leave cities pretty soon, but here I could stay longer. Too bad tomorrow we have to leave again. I hope Major Bloomberg's plan to convert the taxis into hybrid cars will come true soon. This city is definitly ready for a change. We met great people here, I can't even mention all of them.

Bye bye New York!

Next stop: Boston, Brattleboro and Burlington

Plug-in hybrids are the key. For NYC taxis electric cars with replaceable batteries make a lot more sense than hybrids - the electric buses at the Olympics had batteries that were replaced in 5 minutes so that the buses could run 24 hours. Some of the new batteries charge in 1 hour but even that is too long for a taxi or bus, so replacing the batteries is the best option. For normal commuters (not NYC, or anywhere else with a good metro system), a plug-in hybrid with a 40 mile range will almost completely eliminate the need for gasoline as the average commute is only 29 miles and the only time any gas will be used will be on the odd ski trip or other long trip, and with no demand for gasoline, gas will drop to 90 cents/gallon to compete with electricity which costs the equivalent of about 60 cents/gallon.
