Desert Highway17.01.2008

Today I woke up early, picked up the solartaxi at the Ambulance station in Turangi and drove away. I was told there was steep climb ahead, but this was not to compare with Swiss mountains. Actually I am still wondering what elevation I reached, no map really shows that. Anyway, the scenery was the most fantastic I have probably seen since leaving Switzerland. A snowy peak, a giant vulcano and an empty highway through the middle of a lonely bush (or here they call it "desert"), that was the ride of my life! But then I reached next town, plugged my flash card reader into a computer in a shop, very keen to see my pictures, and that was it: That brand new computer whiped off all my pics! Terrible!! Have you ever heard something like this??
I continued without a single picture from desert highway, my mood was down, my heart broken. A lady stopped next to me in a red Nissan, trying to wave me down, but too late, lady, I kept on going, I realized her too late. What the heck she wanted, I thought. I continued down the highway, and, believe it or not, she followed me patiently for another 20 minutes. So I thought this is again someone trying to take a photograph of me and my car, so as long as she doesnt wave me from the street, I won't stop. Finally, the lady with the big sun hat overtook, waved me down, I stopped and she gave me striaght 200 NZ$ into my hand. "What is this for?" that's all I could ask, I was so much surprised. "You are doing a good thing!" she said, sat into her Nissan and drove away.
So this was the first time in my life someone gave me money just like to a beggar, I was absolutly surprised, how wrong I was thinking about what the lady wants from me. But even this money couldnt make my pictures come back, my pics were gone, and for the rest of my day I was quite sad. Arriving in Palmerston North, Wayne and Daniel, both from Massey University, were waiting for me with a great BBQ and a place to stay. I mentioned my destroyed pictures to Daniel, and ... quickly we drove to the University. Daniel promised me that he could eventually retrieve the deleted pictures from my flashcard. Of course I couldnt believe that first, how do you want to make dead things alife?
What a crazy day: Daniel really managed to get my pictures back, from a completly deleted flash card. Have you ever heard something like this? Just need the right "dig-out" software.

Hey!
I just read an article about you on Spiegel Online. Choice!
Are you going to come to the South Island as well? As I am staying in Picton at the moment I might be able to have a look at your car.. :)
Love the project!
Good luck, Katja
